Lyrics by Barry Clark
Arranged by Big Dumb Animals

I'd walk through ground zero for the likes of you
I'd shoot at the Pope if you wanted me to.
I'd quit all my drinking and the cocaine too;
Why tell the truth when a lie will do?

Mommy is an heiress with a PhD,
Daddy's old money and a corporate VP.
Be nice to them and they'll be nice to you
Why tell the truth when a lie will do?

	Chorus:
The hand that feeds you is the hand that bleeds you.
But the hand that needs you is the hand that frees you.

Caught up in the traps that I set for you
Lured by promises that never come true.
Jaded, disillusioned, battered and blue,
Why tell the truth when a lie will do?

One hand washes the other in this confidence game,
Rules of convenience, subject to change.
What's right for me will be right for you,
Why tell the truth when a lie will do?

"And now, ladies and gentlemen... LASER Big Dumb Animals!" -- Matt Souther

Yeah. In a word: ouch. Really could use a refresh... these days we "Tell The Truth" with more aggressive guitars, along with Barry's usual lyrical wit, but this old demo is a bit... flat... Ah, well. "It's a snapshot in time," as we like to say.
